Hypertension—A Rapidly Growing Concern

Even though this is a very prevalent condition, most Americans seriously underestimate how serious it can be. However, that’s not a big surprise in a nation that treats many poor health practices as routine (high sugar intake, fast food, highly processed foods, etc.). The lifestyle that is prevalent in the US is the primary reason that more than 70 million in the country suffer from high blood pressure. If you’re keeping score, that’s shockingly close to one-third of the adult population.

Consider just a few of the dangerous health conditions that are related to hypertension:

  • Stroke
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Arthritis

How to Find Natural Relief

The standard for hypertension care in the US is medication. That is pretty much the same response to every ailment in an industry run by pharmaceutical companies. While blood pressure medications often come with a host of side effects, those side effects are better than being killed by the high blood pressure, so most people just deal with it. However, some case studies have shown that there may be a better way.

When the C1 or C2 vertebrae are out of alignment, many problems can result including an increase in blood pressure. Why is this the case? Studies conducted have not explained the exact reasons why, only that it works. However, consider the following:

  • The vertebral arteries bring blood to the brain by passing through the vertebrae of the upper cervical spine (hence the term vertebral). When the top bones of the spine are out of alignment, they can hinder this blood flow to the brain. Thus, the proper alignment of the spine is related to vascular health.

Once the misalignment is corrected, proper blood flow can be restored. In turn, blood pressure may level off. According to a 2007 study, the results of upper cervical chiropractic care were the equivalent of taking two blood pressure medications. If you are ready to find a natural way to control your blood pressure, upper cervical chiropractic may be the right choice for you.

Natural Alternative to Blood Pressure Medications: High Blood Pressure and Neck Problems

Hypertension and Neck Injuries

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), hypertension is the most common cause of preventable death in developed countries and it is a major risk factor for cardiovascular conditions such as heart attacks and strokes which are the first and third leading cause of death in the US.

Traditionally, the treatment method of choice has been through the use of anti-hypertensive medication. Considering that anti-hypertensive medication has been on the market since the 1950s and the usage of these medications has increased over the years and the incidence of hypertension is also increasing; the current prevention and treatment methods appear to be unsuccessful and we should start looking for alternative methods of treatment.

One such alternative that warrants a closer look is specific chiropractic adjustments to the first cervical vertebra (referred to as C1 or the Atlas vertebra) which has been associated with reducing blood pressure to the equivalent of two-drug combination therapies in patients. This landmark study was published in 2007, indicating the connection between the upper neck and high blood pressure.

Natural Alternative to Blood Pressure Medications

A recent case study published by Dr. Jonathan Chung further investigates the connection. Dr. Chung, Dr. Brown and Dr. Busa published a compelling case study in the Journal of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research. The patient in the case study was taking 2 blood pressure medications when beginning care. After the completion of an upper cervical chiropractic care program of 16 adjustments over several months the patient no longer needed to take any blood pressure medications.

As is a common situation the patient in the case study was involved in several motor vehicle accidents that resulted in head and neck trauma. It is believed that this type of head and neck injury can lead to problems with the brain stem and a reactionary increase in blood pressure.

If you have been diagnosed with high blood pressure and you are looking for natural alternative to blood pressure medications then you should have a thorough neck evaluation by a trained upper cervical specialist.

High Blood Pressure and Migraines Linked to Neck Injuries

How Are Migraines Related to High Blood Pressure?

A recent article in the Journal of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research documented the positive effects of specific, upper cervical chiropractic adjustments on a 25- year-old female with high blood pressure, also known as hypertension and migraines.

A 25-year-old female with medically diagnosed hypertension presented to an upper cervical chiropractic office for treatment. The patient also had symptoms of migraine headaches occurring two times per week. She had been taking Hydrochlorothiazide for her hypertension.

The Upper Cervical Approach

A thorough history and examination were performed and her blood pressure was 134/98 mmHg. The patient was diagnosed with an upper neck misalignment and specific upper cervical x-rays were taken to confirm. Paraspinal thermography, supine leg length assessment, postural assessment and blood pressure measurements were taken at each follow-up visit.

The patient received upper cervical specific chiropractic care for twelve weeks. By the end of care the patient experienced a significant decrease in blood pressure to 114/80 mmHg and also experienced a significant decrease in both frequency and severity of migraine headache symptoms.

This case study is consistent with past research that has looked at the upper cervical spine, blood flow, migraine headaches and hypertension.

More Research Linking the Upper Neck to Blood Pressure

Researchers at the Hypertension Center at the University of Chicago Medical Center reported stunning reductions in the blood pressure of patients afflicted with hypertension following NUCCA chiropractic care.

In the study – published in the March 2, 2007 issue of The Journal of Human Hypertension and featured on WebMD, Good Morning America and other sources – 50 patients with hypertension were divided into two groups of 25 each. One group of 25 received a NUCCA spinal correction to the Atlas vertebra (uppermost bone in the neck). This vertebra holds up the head and only relies on soft tissue to maintain alignment. This misalignment usually goes undiagnosed and causes no pain or discomfort. The other group of 25 received a similar procedure but with no adjustment being given.

After 8 weeks of care, the 25 people in the group receiving the real chiropractic adjustments all showed a significant reduction in blood pressure compared to the group that received the sham adjustment. Those patients who got the real adjustment showed an average of 14 mmHg greater drop in systolic blood pressure (the top number in a blood pressure count), and an average of 8 mm Hg greater drop in diastolic blood pressure (the bottom blood pressure number) over those who got the fake or sham adjustment.

Follow-up X-rays confirmed that the adjustments changed the position of the atlas vertebra among those in the study group. The study leader reported that the procedure had the effect of not one, but two blood pressure medications given in combination. And, his team reported no side effects whatsoever from the adjustment.

So if this NUCCA Procedure has been shown to reduce blood pressure, effect the blood flow from the brain in Migraine patients and influence many other conditions that effect millions of Americans...why hasn't hardly anyone heard of it?
