How could Argo star Ben Affleck be helped by NUCCA?

Many Celebrities and Athletes Struggle with Migraines

"Ben Affleck Out of Poker Championship due to Migraine" was the headline in the New York Post back in July of 2010. The star of oscar award winning Argo has struggled with migraines for years frequently showing up in the media.

We see many athletes, artists, and celebrities getting migraine headaches including NFL giants Terrell Davis, Percy Harvin and Troy Aikman, tennis great Serena Williams, basketball superstar Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and baseball stars Jonathon Papelbon and Johnny Damon; actors Ben Affleck and Whoopi Goldberg.

NUCCA doctors frequently see a 90-95 % success rate with Migraine Headaches being eliminated. The other 5-10% at least see a reduction in the frequency and intensity of these headaches. And they are able to address the underlying cause safely and gently.

So why doesn't Ben Affleck get into a NUCCA doctor's office and get rid of those migraines?

Maybe he just doesn't know about NUCCA.

NUCCA Effective at Getting to the Underlying Cause of Headaches

The answer is trauma. Physical trauma...such as car accidents, falls, sports injuries, childhood injuries and more lead to a tearing loose of the tissue that holds the spine in place. Which creates a weakness. Once that happens the spine begins to breakdown. It starts in the most movable and vulnerable area, the top of the spine where the skull and the spine come together at the Atlas vertebrae. This misaligned upper neck area creates pressure on the brain stem and veins that drain the brain. This is why pressure will begin to build up into the head often leading to headaches. The brain stem irritation also explains the nausea, vomiting, light sensitivity, etc that frequently goes along with Migraine headaches.

These observations are now being demonstrated in the research as well. A recent case study is showing that after an NUCCA correction, a follow-up Phase Contrast Magnetic Resonance (PC MR) Study demonstrated changes in flow from the jugular veins that leave the brain. The subject of the case study obtained relief from migraine headaches by the end of thirty days. The PCMR exam continued to show improvement of the blood flow measured over the 16-week study period as long as the person maintained proper alignment of the upper neck. A larger study is currently being conducted in Canada on Migraines, Atlas misalignments and blood flow changes.

So how about you?

Are you losing parts of your life because of the effects of Migraine Headaches? Or do you have them "under control" with medications. At some point covering up the symptoms will lead to other problems. Or those meds won't work anymore and you will have to get stronger ones.

Isn't it time to find the cause and eliminate it?

Painkillers Are Causing Millions of Headaches

The Vicious Cycle of Medication Overuse Headaches

The BBC is reporting that up to a million people in the UK have "completely preventable" severe headaches caused by taking too many painkillers, doctors have said.

They said some were trapped in a "vicious cycle" of taking pain relief, which then caused even more headaches.

The warning came as part of the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence's (NICE) first guidelines for treating headaches.

"Medication overuse headaches" feel the same as other common headaches or migraines.

There is no definitive UK data on the incidence of the condition, but studies in other countries suggest 1-2% of people are affected, while the World Health Organization says figures closer to 5% have been reported.

While painkillers would be many people's instant response, they could be making sufferers feel even worse.

Prof Martin Underwood, from Warwick Medical School, who led the NICE panel, said: "This can end up getting into a vicious cycle where your headache gets worse, so you take more painkillers, so your headache gets worse and this just becomes worse and worse and worse.

"It is such an easy thing to prevent."

Exactly how painkillers have this effect on the brain is unknown.

Most of the people affected are thought to have started with either everyday, tension-type headaches or migraines. The headaches then became worse as they treated themselves at home.

Main types of headache

  • Tension - the common "everyday" headache most people will experience at some point in their lives. In some cases people have tension headaches on most days of the month.
  • Migraine - severe headache that can last for several days. It gets worse with activity and often comes with nausea as well as sensitivity to light and sound.
  • Cluster - extremely severe pain around the eye and side of the face, also includes swelling and a red watery eye. Some people report eight attacks a day, which can last up to three hours.
  • Medication overuse - feels like a tension headache or a migraine, but is due to taking too many painkillers.
  • However, there are more than 200 types of headache.

Manjit Matharu, a consultant neurologist at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, said there was a tipping point at 10 to 15 days of using pain relief each month when the drugs became the issue.

He said: "This is a huge problem in the population. The figures in terms of the number of people who have medication overuse headache are one in 50, so that is approximately a million people who have headaches on a daily or near daily basis because they're using painkillers."

The new guidelines for doctors in England and Wales advise telling sufferers to immediately stop taking all pain relief. However, this will lead to about a month of agony as patients contend with regular headaches without pain relief, until symptoms eventually improve.

The panel said other options for controlling any underlying headaches, such as preventative treatments, could be considered.

Drug Free Headache Relief

The best solution for headaches of any type is to get the cause of the problem.  For many people headaches begin after a head or neck trauma, such as a car crash, fall or other accident. Traumas like these can cause misalignments in the upper neck. Misalignments in the upper neck have been shown to lead to changes in blood and cerebrospinal fluid flow from the brain to the body and the body to the brain. These changes in fluid exchange in the brain have been linked to many conditions, including migraine headaches , and sleep problems.

The best way to correct a misalignment in the upper neck is by utilizing the NUCCA procedure. NUCCA doctors doctors perform a postural examination in order to determine body imbalance and then take precise 3 dimensional upper neck x-rays in order to mathematically calculate how the misalignment needs to be corrected. After the initial correction, follow-up 3 dimensional x-rays are taken in order to ensure that the misalignment is being corrected properly.

Drug-Free Infant Acid Reflux Relief

Sphincter Not Fully Developed or Not Functioning Well?

Tele-management, the online television website had a recent story on infant acid reflux. In the report they said:

“Infant acid reflux occurs usually because the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) is not fully developed. The LES is responsible for keeping the contents of the stomach away from the esophagus. When it doesn’t function well (or is underdeveloped), acidic stomach contents may be regurgitated into the esophagus, which causes the symptoms of infant acid reflux and heartburn.”

The article goes on to say “It is thought that about half of all infants who are otherwise in good health are affected by infant acid reflux. They may vomit or spit up food and fluid. Acid reflux is the main reason for vomiting in babies during the first four months of life.”

Severely Over-Medicated

Dr. Eric Hassall reports of the extreme over medicating of infants diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease, or acid reflux in the medical Journal Pediatrics, he said:

“in the 6 years from 1999 to 2004, there was a >7-fold increase in PPI prescription. One of the PPIs… saw a 16-fold increase in use during that 6-year period…”

This dramatic increase in acid reflux medications for infants has produced little to no results.

So what should a parent do if their child has the symptoms of acid reflux?

Drug-Free Acid Reflux Relief Is Possible

During the birth process a misalignment can occur in the upper neck that will change the communication between the brain and the body leading to a variety of different problems, including acid reflux. The lower esophageal sphincter musculature is frequently not functioning properly due to improper nerve supply.

Dr. Godfrey Gutmann, a German medical researcher was looking into this connection all the way back to the 1960's... in 1987 Dr. Gutmann published his research linking the upper neck to problems ranging from acid reflux to scoliosis, ear infections, torticollis, colic and many other common childhood conditions.  Gutmann found over 80% of the over 1000 infants in his study had problems in the upper neck!

Birth trauma was the most common cause Dr. Gutman found. Forceps delivery, vacuum extraction and even just normal birthing methods with a woman flat on her back rather than in the standing position where gravity can work, can be an extremely traumatic experience for the head and neck of a newborn.

Upper neck misalignments can be corrected in babies safely, gently and effectively with an upper cervical chiropractic approach such as NUCCA.

What Can I Do to Get Rid of My Migraine Headaches?

Have you been asking this question?

How long have you suffered?

In the Journal of the American Medical Association it was once stated “Headaches are not headaches at all but really a pain in the neck.” Seletz E. Whiplash Injuries. JAMA, 1958; 168(13): 1750-1755>

The most common form of migraine treatment today is the use of prescription drugs. Not only are these medications costly, but they also can cause numerous, negative side effects.

Common drug therapies and their side effects.

| Imitrex | Maxalt | Zomig | Relpax |

  • Abnormal Sensations (tingling, burning)
  • Dizziness (Vertigo)
  • Weakness
  • Neck, Jaw, and Throat Pain
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal Pain

But what if there was a way to get the underlying cause of the Migraines?

Not just cover it up but eliminate the Migraines completely by getting to the reason why you are getting the headaches?

Is it possible?

For many people NUCCA Care has been the missing piece of the puzzle.

NUCCA Specialists have helped thousands of patients reduce the frequency and intensity of their migraine symptoms. Because the upper cervical region of the neck (C1-C2) is more susceptible to injury than the rest of the spine, NUCCA Doctors have found a link between a misalignment of the upper neck area and migraine and other chronic headaches. And they are able to gently and safely address this underlying problem

But the big factor with Migraines is blood flow. Or more properly the improper flow of blood and cerebral spinal fluid from the brain. Research with migraine patients under NUCCA care has shown and improvement in blood flow and CSF flow on before and after MRI's. So not only are people feeling better with NUCCA care but the underlying cause is actually being reversed.

So what are you waiting for?

The science is showing the connection and if you want to hear from more real people like you who have found the help that they needed than check out our reviews and testimonials.

Alternative to Sinus Surgery in Rancho Penasquitos, California

Should I Have Sinus Surgery? Are There Other Options?

Most people with chronic sinus problems will suffer with regular congestion, infections or both for years.  Improper drainage of the sinuses can lead to chronic colds and flu, allergies, fatigue and more.

So what to do?

Take endless decongestants, antihistamines, and nasal steroids?

That will help you to contribute to the $5.8 billion a year that Americans spend on sinus treatments, according to the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Foundation.

You can use a neti pot or another nasal rinse device to try to keep your sinuses clear?

Or you could be one of the 500,000 Americans that have sinus surgery every year!

Some estimates say that up to 90% of sinus problems are really misdiagnosed headache syndromes.  For instance, here’s a case study from an upper cervical chiropractic office:

Upper Cervical Chiropractic Case Study

A 44 year old female who had battled chronic sinus infections, facial pressure, and headaches for over 10 years, came into an upper cervical chiropractic practice. She had sinus surgery about 8 years ago, and have used various kinds of antibiotics and medicated rinses, but found no relief.

Along with sinus trouble, she has scoliosis and chronic neck and shoulder pain for over 15 years. She was constantly “popping” ibuprofen to help ease all the discomfort she was in. She was always achy, edgy, and tired! She found out about NUCCA and eventually, decided to call and see if this was something that could help her.

After a couple months, she really began to notice improvement in her neck mobility and pain. She felt as if it had been “unlocked” and she could move much more easily. Changing lanes on the freeway and backing out of a parking spot was easy again! As her neck pain improved, so did her shoulder pain. In fact, her scoliosis curve even improved!

Over time, as her adjustments starting holding longer and longer, her sinuses started to clear up as well. With NUCCA it is not about being adjusted 1000's of times it is about getting your spine in to the proper position and keeping it that way so that it can heal and function the way the body is designed to.

She weaned herself from all sinus rinses and medications, and did not have another sinus infection. The facial pressure and headaches have decreased significantly and she definitely has more energy. She is even able to exercise again without chronic discomfort.

Can your body heal itself from a chronic sinus problem or other chronic condition?

Only one way to find out...take the next step and schedule a NUCCA evaluation today! To schedule your NUCCA evaluation, click here.

Gentle Care for Young Migraine Sufferers

When most people think of migraines, children are not the primary age group we associate this issue with. However, as much as 5% of those under the age of 10 may experience migraines, and that number quickly rises to 10% for preteens and teens.

Most parents would agree that the kinds of medications usually prescribed for migraines, and all of the side effects that come along with these drugs, are not really something for kids (and the FDA hasn’t approved most of them for use with children anyway). That raises the question: Is there a safer way to get help for migraines?

Searching for the Cause of Migraines

The biggest problem with migraine medications is that they only take care of symptoms and don’t really stop migraines from occurring. To reduce the severity and frequency of migraines, and perhaps even eliminate them altogether, that means attacking the problem at its source. For many, this is an upper cervical misalignment.

When the C1 and C2 are misaligned, this can affect blood flow to the brain, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage, and even put pressure on the spinal cord or brainstem. This is because these bones are situated right at the base of the skull where the spinal cord and brainstem meet. In fact, the very bottom of the brainstem is protected inside the C1 when these bones are aligned properly.

How Upper Cervical Chiropractic Provides Relief

At San Diego Integrative Spine Center, we use the NUCCA technique, a specialized form of upper cervical chiropractic that makes use of diagnostic imaging in pinpointing the misalignment and utilizes an extremely gentle adjustment to correct these subluxations. As a result, this form of chiropractic is safe for those of all ages.

Once the upper spine is realigned, blood flow, CSF drainage, and brainstem function can all be restored to normal. For many this has meant a significant reduction in or even an end to migraines as many case studies have shown.

5 Common Questions about NUCCA Chiropractic

5 Common Questions about NUCCA Chiropractic

Many people are confused about chiropractors in general.  Maybe you are unsure about why you would see a NUCCA (upper cervical) chiropractor and what exactly an upper cervical chiropractor does.

Today were going to look at 5 of the most common questions people have about upper cervical chiropractors.

Is NUCCA Chiropractic Safe?

Some people may be under the impression that chiropractic adjustments are dangerous. But the truth is general chiropractic is extremely safe. In fact, if you compare chiropractic care to medical treatment, drug intervention has many more side effects. If you just watch television for a while you’ll hear about all the side effects that are associated with medications that are advertised on TV.

Especially when you evaluate the upper cervical chiropractic approach that we take, which is extremely gentle with no crunching, popping or twisting of the spine common with other spinal approaches. This gentle and precise approach is able to effectively address postural issues and spinal misalignments while creating long-term spinal stability.

Chiropractic is widely recognized as one of the safest drug-free, non-invasive therapies available. Although chiropractic has an excellent safety record, no health treatment is completely free of potential adverse effects. The risks associated with chiropractic, however, are very small. Many patients feel immediate relief following chiropractic treatment, but some may experience mild soreness, stiffness or aching, just as they do after some forms of exercise. Current research shows that minor discomfort or soreness following upper cervical chiropractic typically fades within 24 hours.

Is NUCCA Chiropractic Just for Bad Backs?

When most people think about chiropractic, they think of someone that is having back pain. But chiropractors have successfully helped people with all sorts of conditions , including sciatica, headaches, neck problems, arm and leg numbness and tingling, and more. There are also many people who just see a chiropractor to prevent problems and stay healthy.

Are NUCCA Chiropractors Well Educated?

Another common misconception is that chiropractors do not have a good educational background. This just isn’t true. After completing undergraduate work, chiropractors go on to receive a Doctor of Chiropractic degree. Between undergraduate and doctoral work, a chiropractor graduating from chiropractic school will have had over 8 years of education beyond high school. The Doctor of chiropractic curriculum includes a minimum of 4,200 hours of classroom, laboratory and clinical experience.

Upper cervical chiropractors go beyond just their general chiropractic education and spend hundreds of postgraduate hours learning there specific technique.

Is It True That Once You See a Chiropractor You Always Have To?

I’ve heard this one many times over the years. But the truth is there is nothing about seeing a upper cervical chiropractor that will force you to keep seeing one. People continue to see chiropractors for their health because they want to, not because they have to.

When you choose to see an upper cervical chiropractor it is generally because you’re having some sort of a health problem. Those that continue to see chiropractors usually have seen significant results. The problem that they came to the office for has improved or is gone or they have seen all the other benefits associated with chiropractic, such as better sleep, more energy, stronger immune system etc.

And the goal in our office is to help you hold your adjustment as long as possible. It is not about being adjusted, thousands of times, it is about keeping your spine in alignment for as long as possible so that your body can heal and function optimally.

Is NUCCA Chiropractic Affordable?

When you compare chiropractic to variety of other things that we spend money on such as braces for teeth, plastic surgery, LASIK eye surgery, etc. the cost of having a healthy, strong, and mobile spine is a great value.

Chiropractic care has been consistently shown to be cost effective. For example, The Manga Report, a 1993 Canadian government study was quoted as saying:

“There would be highly significant cost savings if more management of low-back pain was transferred from physicians to chiropractors… Users of chiropractic care have substantially lower health care costs, especially inpatient costs, than those who use medical care only.”

Migraines and Panic Disorders Linked According to Research

Migraines and Panic Disorders

Migraines.com wrote a recent article highlighting the link between migraines and panic disorders. The Mayo Clinic defines migraines as an "intense throbbing or pulsing in one area of the head, and is commonly accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound." WebMD defines panic disorders as "sudden attacks of fear and nervousness, as well as physical symptoms such as sweating and racing heart."

While most medical research focusses on drug therapies for both conditions, Upper Cervical chiropractors look to signs of physical restrictions at the base of the skull. Upper Cervical Chiropractors use complex imaging to see the opening at the base of the skull in 3D, and specifically correct any misalignments that can interfere with the nerve structures at the level just beneath the brainstem.

Drug-Free Relief of Migraines

Dr. Raymond Damadian, the inventor of the MRI has been doing some amazing research with upright MRIs and specialized software. He's been able to show that when someone has a misalignment in the upper neck it is actually changing the flow of cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) to, from and through the brain. CSF is the fluid that lubricates the brain and spinal cord.  These misalignments could be leading to migraine headaches, panic disorders and more.

The obstruction comes as the first few bones in the neck become misaligned and causes a backup of CSF and increased pressure inside the head. When this misalignment was corrected by an upper cervical procedure such as NUCCA, the studies show that the pressure inside the head decreases and the CSF flow becomes normal.

For example, one of the studies reports on two patients who presented with severe, long-standing migraine headaches and other complications following whiplash injuries. Both patients were examined in an upright MRI utilizing specialized software, which allowed for evaluation of CSF flow.

It was found that in each patient there was a misalignment of the 1st cervical vertebra (Atlas), as well as substantially reduced CSF flow between the skull and the neck. Both patients received an upper cervical correction directed at the C1 misalignment.

Within an hour of the correction both patients were rescanned and normal CSF flow was restored. Additionally, the headache pain was nearly eliminated immediately after the correction in both patients.

The researchers stated:

Prior research has demonstrated a correlation between CSF flow obstruction and intracranial pressure headaches. This is a potentially significant clinical finding (CSF obstruction) that can lead to long-term and often unexplained complaints of unresolved headaches, neck pain, tingling, numbness, and a variety of other symptoms.

This type of upper neck correction can only be performed by a specially trained group of doctors.

The Far-Reaching Effects of Whiplash

Enduring whiplash due to a car accident or another similar trauma can have a negative effect on the entire body, leading to a number of different health conditions. It may not be a well-known fact, but trauma such as whiplash can actually change the flow of blood and cerebrospinal fluid that reaches the brain. Often, this disruption in fluid leads to symptoms such as migraines.

How Vehicle Accidents Cause Migraines

Migraines remain a mystery in the medical community. No one is sure exactly why they occur. One thing that is agreed upon, however, is that migraines often are connected to a misalignment in the upper bones of the neck – in particular, the C1 (atlas) and C2 (axis). Migraines may be a result of whiplash. In fact, the injury may have happened many years ago and is now just making itself known as a migraine.

It is vital for anyone who has had a recent injury to the head or neck to seek the care of an upper cervical chiropractor. By caring for neck injuries in a timely manner, one may reduce the risk of further complications down the road. Whiplash can do damage to someone’s neck at as slow of a speed as 5 MPH. Seeking care immediately is the best way to ensure one’s future health.

How Upper Cervical Chiropractic Helps Whiplash Injuries

If whiplash causes a misalignment in one’s upper cervical spine, this may hinder the central nervous system from working properly. It can also be the reason for a reduction in the amount of blood and cerebrospinal fluid reaching or exiting the brain. Either of these conditions can wreak havoc on the body.

Here at San Diego Integrative Spine Center, we use a gentle method to help the bones of the upper neck to move back into their original place. Once this is done, the body can take over and begin to repair the damage. This is often all that is needed to see a decrease in the symptoms of whiplash such as migraines.

Migraines Linked to Panic and Anxiety Disorders

Migraines and panic attacks may not seem to be likely companions, but let’s take a closer look at both of these conditions and see how they are related.

A migraine is a neurological disorder that has the following symptoms:

  • Severe, throbbing head pain

  • Sensitivity to light, sound, and odors

  • Nausea and vomiting

Panic and/or anxiety disorders are known for:

  • Sudden attacks of nervousness and fear

  • Sweating

  • Racing heart

Interestingly, studies have revealed that there is a strong link between migraines and panic attacks. Some people experience a migraine when a panic attack is at its worst point. Others have migraines or other headache types before a panic attack. It seems as if those who have both migraines and panic attacks have a tougher time coping with the panic disorder, while depression plays a role for a person who has more migraines overall.

Where to Find Migraine Relief in San Diego, CA

At San Diego Integrative Spine Center, we use a different approach when helping migraine patients cope with their pain. We utilize specialized that allow us to take a close look at the person’s upper cervical spine, focusing particularly on the C1 and C2. If a misalignment is present here, it can have a profound effect on the nerves that lie below the brainstem and the brainstem itself. The body cannot communicate properly, and intracranial pressure can build up if blood and cerebrospinal fluid are not regulated correctly. This can lead to the onset of a migraine.

Once the misalignment has been found, a gentle technique called NUCCA is used to encourage the bones to move back into place more naturally. The body can then begin utilizing its own healing powers to repair the damage done by the misalignment. Case studies have shown that it only takes one or two adjustments to see improvement in most people. Some see their migraine symptoms decrease, while others find that migraines go away completely.

How to Avoid the Pain of Carpal Tunnel in San Diego, CA

Carpal tunnel syndrome is brought about by pressure on the median nerve, the central nerve in the wrist. The symptoms are:

  • Muscle weakness in the hand and a tendency to drop things.

  • Numbness and tingling in the fingers or hand, but never the little finger. It can extend from the wrist up your entire arm.

  • Having pain all the time in the hand or wrist area.

Can a person take any steps to prevent carpal tunnel? Here are some suggestions:

  • Maintain good posture: This helps prevent nerve pain and assists in keeping the wrists at the right angle (your hands should not be lower than your wrists when typing).

  • Use the proper equipment: A vertical mouse and an ergonomic keyboard might seem hard to use at first, but once a person gets used to them the benefits outweigh the discomfort.

  • Use a brace for the wrist: There are special braces designed to help one not overuse certain muscles of the wrist. This is important to use if a person is already feeling stress on the wrist.

  • Give it a rest: Keep an eye on how the wrist is feeling. If it starts to feel strained, stop what you are doing and give it a break for a few minutes. Resting now and then is much better than having to take weeks off to recover from surgery.

Alleviating Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel

If one is already experiencing the symptoms mentioned above, he may find relief by visiting an upper cervical chiropractor. At San Diego Integrative Spine Center, we examine each patient to find exactly where the nerve damage is coming from. Sometimes, it may be due to misalignment in the upper neck vertebrae.

I have been specifically trained to find and correct these kinds of issues by using a gentle procedure aimed at realigning the C1 and C2 vertebrae. It does not require me to pop or force the spine into place. After correcting this misalignment, many patients report feeling better overall.

What Is Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis is a debilitating condition that can gradually take away a person’s ability to handle everyday activities. It can be especially upsetting to a family when one member is affected. Long testing periods leading up to a diagnosis can be very stressful, leading to things such as sleepless nights, feelings of hopelessness, and even fights among family members as tensions rise. Hopefully, understanding more about the condition and knowing that help exists will relieve some of the stress.

Understanding the Effects of Multiple-Sclerosis

The myelin sheath is responsible for protecting the nerve cells. When a person suffers from MS, that covering is damaged, and this results in a slowing down of the body’s nerve signals. As a result, communication between the brain and body suffers. When this communication slows down, the outward symptoms of MS are the result.

Unfortunately, there are numerous conditions that can cause similar symptoms resulting in a long process of ruling out other conditions in order to get an official diagnosis. This can be the most frustrating part of the battle. However, whether you have a diagnosis yet or not, there is something you can do help your body’s internal communication system.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic Benefits

When a person is suffering from MS, having the brain and body communicate optimally is critical. Another factor that can affect this communication is an upper cervical subluxation, which can put pressure on the brainstem and restrict the proper flow of fluids such as a blood and cerebrospinal fluid.

By identifying and correcting these misalignments, an upper cervical chiropractor can provide many potential benefits. Among these may be decreased symptom severity or fewer flare-ups of chronic conditions like MS.  If you are suffering from such a chronic condition, especially if you have a history of head or neck trauma that could have caused a misalignment, a consultation may be your first step on the road to being more active again.

Neck Pain - Identifying the Underlying Issue

While neck pain may be no more than uncomfortable stiffness for one person, another may deal with disabling pain. In fact, more than 30% of people suffer from neck pain at some point during any given year. Unfortunately, even though it is one of the top five pain locations, neck pain doesn’t get as much recognition from the medical community as some of the other parts of the body.

Possible Causes of Chronic Neck Pain

Why is neck pain so commonplace? For many, the problem is related to work, and not just the type of work that a person does. Being unsatisfied with a job or hating the boss can be a literal pain in the neck. Stress leads to sleep problems and depression, both of which are connected to neck pain.

Another major factor when it comes to neck pain is posture. For some, technology is creating a habit of poor posture. Staring at a monitor all day at work or texting with the neck craned down on a regular basis can result in neck problems.

Sleep position may also be a factor. Sleeping on one’s stomach wreaks havoc on the neck. It is the equivalent of looking over your shoulder for eight hours straight.

At San Diego Integrative Spine Center, we focus on the C1 and C2 vertebrae which commonly come out of alignment when a person is stressed, has a habit of poor posture, or sleeps in the wrong position on a regular basis. For many, such a misalignment is the real underlying cause of the pain.

Once the misalignment is corrected, the tissues of the neck can begin to heal. When stress is reduced, posture is corrected, and sleep position is changed, these corrections can be long-lasting and provide ongoing relief. This is a safe and natural way to deal with neck pain without having to reach for a bottle of pain relievers.

Surprising Solution to Sciatica

Upper Cervical Chiropractic and Sciatica

Sciatica is a disorder which causes a set of symptoms including pain in the derrière or leg that becomes worse when sitting, standing or squatting, also it can cause a burning or tingling “pins and needles” sensation in the leg, weakness, numbness, difficulty of motion in the foot or leg.  The sciatic nerve runs from the spine through the buttocks, the tight and down the leg on both sides of the body.  It is not abnormal for symptoms to manifest only on one side of the body.

Causes of Sciatica

Back pain and sciatica can be caused by disc problems in the back.  Muscle trauma or injury is another cause for sciatica.  Extra weight causes pressure on the lower back, so pregnancy and obesity are also common sciatica pain causes.  In addition there are some spinal diseases such as swelling, arthritis and cancer that can cause the pain as well.

Common Sciatica Treatments

Most sciatica patients begin with NSAID’s such as Advil which help to bring down swelling and pain levels.  Muscle relaxers and epidural steroid medicines are also used for anesthetic and swelling relief.  In certain cases, surgery can be done, to fix a damaged disk or remove a tumor, for example.  But many people are concerned about the side effects associated with drugs and surgery.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic Treatment

Seeking proper alignment through upper cervical chiropractic could be the answer to relieve your back pain and sciatica.  The ultimate goal of upper cervical chiropractic care is to correct misalignments in the spine that may be leading to long standing postural problems.

So since upper cervical chiropractic focuses on alignment in the area of the upper spine, how does it help sciatica which is pain at the lower area of the spine?  It helps because misalignment in the top of spine causes a shift that forces your body to compensate.  Therefore, fixing  misalignments at the top of the spine through upper cervical chiropractic, can help as your body begins to perform properly with no more over-correction for misalignments at the top of the spine.  If you are interested in the benefits of upper cervical chiropractic for sciatica, begin by scheduling a consultation with an upper cervical chiropractor in your area.

Whiplash and Dizziness: The Connection May Surprise You?

How Does Whiplash Effect the Ears?

Two million people are exposed to whiplash injury (related to an auto accident) in the U.S. every year.

When the head is suddenly jerked back and forth or side-to-side beyond its normal limits, ligaments supporting the neck vertebrae can be sprained (over-stretched) or torn, forcing vertebrae out of their normal position.

In tests of low speed rear impact collisions, it was reported that the neck can be injured even in slow speeds accidents as low as 5 mph.

Most rear impact accidents occur at crash speeds of 6 to 12 mph - speeds below the threshold for property damage to the vehicle - but sufficient to cause neck injury.

Whiplash injuries to the cervical spine can occur in sports (skiing, hockey, football, cycling, ice skating, gymnastics, boxing), during falls (down a flight of stairs, on an icy sidewalk), and many more!

German researchers Dr. Kaeser and Dr. Ettlin have found that a whiplash injury can lead to a variety of problems including dizziness, speech problems, throat problems and hearing loss

In the conclusion of the research article, these German medical doctors say that whiplash symptoms often respond to upper neck adjustments.

HOW CAN NUCCA HELP?

If a person (infant, child, or adult) experiences an accident, a proper spinal exam is necessary to assess whether a neck injury occurred. An NUCCA upper cervical chiropractic specialist uses specialized testing and specific x-rays of the upper neck to accurately assess a neck injury. If a neck injury is found, a specific adjustment by hand is used to correct the injured vertebrae. Correction of the neck injury can improve, reverse, and prevent numerous whiplash symptoms.

Keep Your Spine Healthy Through NUCCA

NUCCA is a specific form of chiropractic that has to do with caring for the upper cervical spine, specifically the C1 (atlas) and C2 (axis) vertebrae. The brainstem is also a vital part of the equation as it is responsible for a number of functions of the body such as:

  • Coordinating jaw and eye movement, the tongue and larynx, facial expressions, and movement of the head and neck

  • Delivering messages to and from the brain and body via the nerves

  • Controlling vital basic functions such as breathing, blood pressure, and heart rate

  • Connecting the cerebrum—the lower part of the brain— to the spinal cord

The body relies heavily on the cranial nerves and the nerves that pass through the brainstem. If the brainstem becomes severely damaged, the body is negatively impacted. Injuries and ailments, such as stroke, can lead to a coma or even a progressive vegetative state.

Due to the fact that the brainstem is responsible for so many vital functions, stroke can damage a person’s speech, movements, vision, or pain receptors. This is just part of why keeping the upper cervical spine in alignment is so important to one’s health and well-being.

How NUCCA Helps the Spine

At San Diego Integrative Spine Center, we use a specific method of upper cervical chiropractic called NUCCA. This method involves a low force correction to a part of the neck that helps the bones to realign in a natural way. We never resort to popping or twisting the spine to readjust the bones.

A misalignment in this area of the neck can have negative influences on the entire body. By realigning these bones many patients see serious health problems, such as migraines, vertigo, sciatica, and many others, go away entirely. It is important for everyone to make sure that their body is in the best working order as it possibly can be, and the neck plays a key role in overall health and wellbeing.

Reasons for Back and Neck Pain in San Diego

Suffering Beyond Knots

That pain in your back or neck didn't just happen. There is a reason for it. And if there is a reason for it, there is something you can do about it.

Though, before we talk about what you can do to alleviate that pain in your back or neck, let's explore some of those things that may be the cause of your suffering. We hope it's just a knot, but it may be something more. Here are some of those more common causes.

Causes of Back and Neck Pain

  • Herniated Disc – (Slipped Disc) A soft, gel like substance between your vertebra called a disc keeps your vertebra from grinding against each another. You feel the pain when a disc slips out of position and the vertebra grind against each other.
  • Cervical Osteoarthritis – (Cervical Spondylosis) This is also the cause of Arthritis in the neck and occurs due to the degeneration of the facet joints in the cervical spine.
  • Degenerative Disc Disease – Once a disc sustains an injury, because there is no blood flow to it, it takes longer to heal than other tissue. This disease occurs when the disc does not heal, and it is often the result of a low energy injury to a disc.
  • Whiplash – It is not that difficult to strain the muscles in your neck, and that occurs when your neck is extended too far in any direction.

Realigning Your Spine

Now, these are just some of the conditions that may be the underlying cause of your neck or back pain. There is a chance that pain may subside with some ice, but there is a chance it may not. Even if it does, there is a chance it could come back at a later time in a more severe way.

Of course, whether your back or neck pain is due to one of the reasons above, another disease or condition, or just sleeping on it wrong, it's always a good idea to have an upper cervical chiropractor examine your upper neck vertebrae for any misalignments.

Due to the position of the upper neck vertebrae, a misalignment of only ¼ of a millimeter can hinder communication between the brain and the body. That can cause all sorts of complications that can manifest itself as back pain, neck pain, or worse.

Jaw Pain Relief in Rancho Penasquitos, California

What is TMJ?

Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ) involve pain affecting the muscles used for chewing.  People with TMJ will experience severe jaw pain.  It is the most common reason for jaw pain other than dental reasons, like a toothache.  Sufferers of this type of disorder may also experience tightening and restricted motion of these muscles.

If you’ve ever noticed a clicking sound when you chew – you are experiencing symptoms of TMJ.  It can also mimic the feelings of tooth pain, cause headaches and ringing in the ears and dizziness.  Surprisingly, a large number of the adult population is affected by this – anywhere between 20-30% of us, usually those between the ages of 20 and 40.  It is more common for women to suffer from this than men.  One of the most common causes for this type of pain is car accidents or other trauma.  The symptoms can appear immediately after the trauma, or they can take years to become noticeable.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care

Upper Cervical Chiropractic is a specific speciality of chiropractic which puts its emphasis on the atlanto-occipital joint in the upper spine.  This division of chiropractic has been in practice since the 1930’s.  It has many positive effects on the alignment of the spine, posture and the symptoms experienced by those who suffer with TMJ.  It is supported by many years of anecdotal and empirical evidence.  The purpose of upper cervical chiropractic for TMJ is to reverse the damage done by the trauma that caused it.

How Does it Work?

An upper cervical chiropractor corrects posture and alignment of the head, neck and spine, which can relieve painful symptoms of many disorders, including TMJ. Upper cervical chiropractic is safe, precise and gentle.   When your muscles and bones are pulling evenly they each carry the weight and perform the functions they were meant to do, so they are not overly taxed or burdened with tasks and weights they were not meant to carry.

When a Child Has Multiple Sclerosis

Receiving word that your child has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis can be devastating. Parents naturally want what is best for their young ones, especially in the way of health and happiness. Multiple sclerosis is a condition that can be challenging and life altering. What is MS? What can be done to help treat the condition?

Nerve Damage and MS

Each nerve cell has a protective coating called the myelin sheath. For individuals with MS, this sheath is damaged. Nerve cells play an integral part in the communication between the central nervous system and the rest of the body. Damage to these cells slows down or stops normal communication. How do these cells become damaged?

An autoimmune reaction is normally blamed for the attacks to the myelin sheath. As far as what triggers this type of response in the first place, there are a few ideas. One theory, in particular, has been getting more attention due to research results. It centers on what is known as chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency or CCSVI. CCSVI is obstructed venous flow, particularly as it pertains to the draining of the brain and spinal cord. The condition correlates closely to MS. The structural issues within the vascular network can create a host of issues. Research is pointing to multiple sclerosis as one of them.

Upper Cervical Care and Multiple Sclerosis

Links between the uppermost vertebrae in the neck and MS continue to be found. One study published noted that 100% of the participants with MS had a history of an injury resulting in the misalignment of the upper cervical vertebrae. Another more recent study showed the dramatic benefits that realigning these vertebrae had on the disease. In one case study, the reversal of MS symptoms was documented. These findings highlight the close link between upper neck alignment and the debilitating neurological effects of MS.

Origin of Migraines – Nervous System and Brain Connections

Just how common are migraines? It has been estimated that one in four households has a member that suffers from the condition in North America alone. While the effects are widespread, the actual inner workings that create the migraine are not well known. There are theories that continue to be explored. A broad spectrum of symptoms makes it difficult to research. Some of these include pain (at times severe), nausea and vomiting, visual disturbances, and sensitivities to touch, sound, or light.

One of the theories as to the cause of migraine headaches is that changes in the vascular system within the brain can trigger migraine symptoms. A recent experiment, using drugs called vasodilators which widen blood vessels, showed how the changes in the vascular networks within the brain heighten neuronal activity. In the study, the dilation of the vessels affected the central part deep within the brain. Researchers found that an increase in neurotransmitters firing in this part of the brain caused triggered symptoms similar to that of migraines.

To learn more about the connection between head and neck injuries and migraines download our complimentary e-book by clicking the image below:

Research such as this helps highlight what upper cervical chiropractors have known for quite some time. It is vitally important that pressure on the nervous and vascular system within the brainstem be released. This type of pressure can inhibit normal vascular function and increase the production of neurotransmitters. When allowed to continue, it can create unstable environments where migraine activity can easily be triggered. Through careful measurements and gentle adjusting of the upper cervical vertebrae, any pressure that was caused by the misalignment of these structures is released. The body is able to heal and then regulate the processes that were affected. When this happens, many experience long-term relief from the often debilitating effects of migraine headaches.

If you or someone you know is suffering from migraines, come by our office. We have experience in helping many patients overcome this condition – and without the use of pharmaceuticals.

What Causes Severe Migraine and Neck Pain?

Severe Migraine and Neck Pain

Neck pain can be an early sign of a migraine or may show up after the episode, leaving sufferer's with a throbbing pain at the back of the neck. According to an online survey generated by the National Headache Foundation, 38% of migraine patients said they always experience neck pain and 31% said they frequently had neck pain along with their migraine headaches.

It is very common for a tightness in the shoulders and neck to cause a cervicogenic headache (or migraine), which is a condition connected to the cervical spine. This occurs because tightness in the neck muscles and joints stimulates nerves in the neck that extend into the head, resulting in the pain traveling to the head, causing a headache. When it comes to the neck and migraine, the same process takes place except that when the signals reach the head it causes a migraine for those who are prone to getting them.

Muscle tightness and neck pain are usually signs of mental or physical stress and posture, all that can be effectively addressed naturally without drugs. Instead of simply opting for medication to treat migraine neck pain, take a look at your overall health and see if any changes need to be made, including finding time to relax, exercise and to learn stress relieving techniques.

Migraine Medication Management

Medication management of migraine and neck pain generally starts with analgesics like aspirin, acetaminophen and NSAIDs, however the results vary from patient to patient. Sometimes a combination of medications is prescribed, however, this approach has the potential for causing rebound migraine. If this approach fails, a cautious use of an opioid can be prescribed, using a sustained release medication around the clock for unrelenting headaches in the hopes of preventing a rebound effect. Invasive practices may also be considered and they include trigger point injections, facet joint blocks, occipital nerve blocks, nerve root blocks, segmental nerve root blocks, etc. it is important to be aware that all of these pharmaceutical approaches have side effects, and do not address the underlying cause of the migraines only attempt to relieve symptoms temporarily.

Natural Migraine Alternative

Symptoms of cervical spine dysfunction usually include tension and migraine headache (cervicogenic headache). Upper cervical chiropractic care is focused on finding and correcting any alignment issue in your neck that can cause not only migraine neck pain, but a number of other chronic health problems and conditions. Because the human response to trauma and injury is to realign the body, down to even the pelvis and hip area, tension is placed on the spine as well as the cranial nerves, nervous system and also affects blood flow. Gentle and safe upper cervical corrections can relieve and even eliminate neck pain, getting the neck and spine back into the correct positions, without jerking or twisting your neck during the procedure.

Correcting underlying neck injuries will frequently decrease or eliminate migraine headache pain. The best and safest approach available to address severe migraine and neck pain is upper cervical chiropractic and positive lifestyle changes that include following a healthy diet plan, getting a proper amount of sleep, exercise and finding a way to reduce tension.

Muscle Knots—Causes and Treatment

Muscle knots happen to just about everyone at some time. It may just be a dull ache, but sometimes they can cause a sharp pain. Moving may make the pain worse. Whether the knot is in your neck, shoulder, back, or somewhere else, what can you do to make it feel better? Let’s consider a natural remedy that can help the pain of muscle knots without the use of medication.

Knots often develop due to overuse of a muscle, but they can also be caused by misuse of a muscle. When the muscle fibers constrict and will not release, a knot is the result. Some knots can be as small as a pinhead, and yet may still cause pain. Others may be the size of a person’s thumb.

Other Ways that Muscle Knots Form

If a person has been involved in an accident or has been injured in some other way, muscle knots can result. This is often the case with a whiplash type injury. Knots may appear following a strenuous workout or after a difficult day of physical labor at work or around the house. Of course, knots don’t have to come about in some spectacular way. Just laying or sitting the wrong way for a lengthy period of time can cause a knot to form. To keep knots from forming, one must be careful to use proper posture at all times.

Natural Relief from Knots

Most people immediately think about going to a massage therapist when they want natural relief from muscle knots. While that may be an expensive solution, a person may not always have a mate or close friend with the finger strength and skill to work out a knot through massage. Of course, many items such as foam rollers are available to help work knots out.

Another means of natural knot relief is upper cervical chiropractic care. This is especially true when the knots are due to an injury. Even a knot that is in the lower back may be related to an upper neck injury. When the upper vertebrae are properly aligned, the effects are felt throughout the entire spine. This makes upper cervical care a great way to treat neck, back, and shoulder pain.

Coping with Shoulder Pain in San Diego, California

What type of shoulder pain are you experiencing? Is it a feeling of weakness or numbness? A tingling feeling that extends down the arm? A dull ache, or perhaps even a sharp shooting pain? Consider a few of the underlying causes of shoulder pain:

  • Problems with the shoulder itself

  • Labral injuries

  • Rotator Cuff injuries

  • Shoulder dislocations or separations

Nerve Damage Resulting in Shoulder Pain

When the shoulder itself is the source of the problem, it may be that the nerves are being irritated by a neck misalignment. The nerves in the shoulder extend all the way down to the hand, so any numbness, tingling, or pain in the hand, arm, or shoulder may go back to this one underlying issue.

This calls for a visit to an upper cervical chiropractic. We specifically focus on finding and caring for upper cervical misalignments that may result in shoulder nerve irritation. The process begins with x-rays that will reveal if a misalignment exists. Then a gentle program of adjustments can be tailored to meet the patient’s specific needs.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic and Shoulder Pain

Many patients find that shoulder problems are improved following the first adjustment. Even if this is not the case, one of the advantages of upper cervical care is that adjustments hold for a longer amount of time than general chiropractic. This gives the body more time to heal from the nerve irritation the misalignment was causing. As a result, the pain may also resolve over a period of time.

All of this is done without the popping, twisting, or cracking involved in general chiropractic. The gentle adjustments offer patients with should pain a natural means of seeking relief. Patients who have a history of head or neck trauma are more likely to have such a misalignment and to reap the benefits of an adjustment.

Can a Car Crash Lead to Fibromyalgia?

In the June 2011 edition of the Journal of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research.  Dr. Nimira Alibhoy DC presents the case of a 45-year-old female with a history of two major head traumas and 10 car accidents leading to complaints of an 11 year history of fibromyalgia.  The history from the study is quite remarkable:

The patient was a 45-year-old female with Fibromyalgia.  Symptoms included migraine headaches, chronic pain in the neck, upper and lower back,  numbness in fingers, sciatica, right knee pain, depression, and duodenal ulcer.

She sustained a traumatic injury from diving head first into a shallow pool at the age of 15. The patient was then in 10 car accidents over 25 years.

She was later diagnosed with fibromyalgia by her medical doctor. Five years after the diagnosis, she had another traumatic head injury, when she fell head first down a flight of stairs. This increased her sciatica, neck, and back pain.

The patient had been to five general chiropractors over 12 years, who provided temporary relief of her Fibromyalgia symptoms. She was in chronic pain and suffered from depression. She was given Vicodin, Flexeril, or Soma at different times for her pain and soft tissue injuries. Her activity levels were limited in that she could not use stairs, swim, or walk further than 20 feet. She used a wheelchair as it helped her complete her daily routine and limit her tiredness.

Not All Chiropractors are the same

A history of head or neck trauma should always be investigated by an Upper Cervical Chiropractor trained in the detection and correction of the Atlas Subluxation Complex (A misalignment of the top bone in the neck).  This misalignment causes brain stem dysfunction which can lead to all sorts of changes in the way that all the body systems work.  Specifically important in patients diagnosed with Fibromyalgia is the brain stem connection to the immune system, circulatory system, respiratory system and digestive system.  Along with the connection of the brain stem with the postural muscles up and down the spinal column.

Here is the results for the patient in the study who was able to get the proper upper cervical chiropractic care needed to correct the underlying Brain Stem Subluxation.

Within six months of the first upper cervical correction, the patient revealed that she no longer needed wheelchair assistance. At the first re-evaluation, she reported that her fibromyalgia and left leg sciatica had resolved. She was able to move and perform basic daily functions and sleep in any position. She was feeling more relaxed and had more energy throughout the day. She stated that the sciatica in her right leg improved by 60% and was no longer on any medications.

At second re-evaluation, she stated that her chronic back pain and headaches had resolved. She only continued to have minor right sciatica. By the fifth re-evaluation, 6 months into care, her knee tenderness had also resolved. Her sciatica on the right had 98% improvement.  She stated she was able to perform house and yard work. She was also able to swim, walk distances, and stand for long periods of time without taking Tylenol or Advil. The only complaint she had at this point was right hip pain.

Are Migraines Related to Neck Pain?

Many people complain of a sore neck before or after they experience a migraine. This is not uncommon. The National Headache Foundation discovered that thirty-eight percent of those with migraines also have neck pain before or after a headache. Some thirty-one percent say they have neck pain in conjunction with migraines. So, overall, sixty-nine percent of migraine sufferers also have neck pain. That is a pretty large number.

The Cause

Pain in the neck can be caused by a tightness felt in the muscles surrounding the neck and shoulder area. Because this affects the nerves of the cervical spine, it is referred to as a cervicogenic headache. Something causes the nerves of the spine to become activated. These nerves reach into the head and, when irritated, cause migraines. The tightness experienced in the neck area can be caused by stress or tension. This can be mental or physical. What can cause this?

The Environment

Sometimes the environment in which a person lives can be a cause of stress. This needs to be examined carefully. Some things to do to alleviate a stressful environment are to

  • Schedule downtime to relax
  • Eat a healthier diet
  • Be sure to spend time doing an enjoyable activity

Exercise and techniques to help reduce stress, such as breathing exercises, can also be helpful. Dealing positively with stress will help reduce migraines. What if something more is needed?

The Solution

A person may do all of the above and are still not seeing a reduction in head pain. A professional may need to be consulted. If a natural, pain-free treatment is desired, it is a good idea to consult with an upper cervical chiropractor. You may be feeling the effects of a tiny misalignment of ¼ of a millimeter in your upper neck. A past accident or injury could have caused this. It could be something you don't even remember happening. This misalignment can cause changes in blood and spinal fluid flow and nerve damage. This, in turn, can affect your nervous system causing migraines.

At San Diego Integrative Spine Center, we use the NUCCA technique to detect and correct these misalignments. Adjustments are both gentle and effective. This can result in positive, long-lasting effects and may even completely eliminate a patient’s migraine problem.

The Role of Inflammation in Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis. MS, Extreme tiredness, Dizzy, Dizziness, Weak, Fog The debilitating condition multiple sclerosis (MS) is becoming one of the leading neurological diseases affecting young adults. The disease affects both men and women, but it occurs twice as much in women as it does in men. The disease is more often found in the northern temperate climate zones. In the United States, there are 250,000 known cases of MS.

The brain and spinal cord make up the central nervous system, and this is the system that MS affects. Nerves have a protective coating or sheath. This cover of the brain and spinal cord becomes damaged and scar tissue forms. Exactly what causes MS to happen has eluded the medical community. Often, treatments can only focus on reducing the symptoms felt by the patient. This makes it difficult to find a lasting solution or even lasting relief from the problem. Studies have discovered a few facts regarding MS and some of its nature.

  1. The condition is an autoimmune disease (the body attacks itself)

  2. Inflammation can adversely affect the brain and that, in turn, can lead to MS-like symptoms

Inflammation is a natural response triggered by the immune system. Improving immune system function can aid in reducing the inflammation. How can this be done?

Upper Cervical Care and Multiple Sclerosis

The upper cervical vertebrae located at the base of the skull are directly related to proper immune function as indicated by researchers. If there is a misalignment of these bones, nervous system function as well as immune function can be hindered. Aligning the structures to their proper position may have great effects on an individual suffering from MS. Studies conducted on MS patients who are under upper cervical chiropractic care found that MS symptoms were reduced, and healing of the degeneration was noted.

Back Surgeries Fail 74% of the time

Unable to Return to Work and Now in More Pain

Are you considering having back surgery?

Have you already had back surgery and are still struggling with symptoms?

Research is now revealing that back surgery fails a startling 74% of the time!

In the study, researchers reviewed records from 1,450 patients in the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation database who had diagnoses of disc degeneration, disc herniation or radiculopathy, a nerve condition that causes tingling and weakness of the limbs. Half of the patients had surgery to fuse two or more vertebrae in hopes of curing low back pain. The other half had no surgery, even though they had comparable diagnoses.

After two years, just 26 percent of those who had surgery had actually returned to work. That’s compared to 67 percent of patients who didn’t have surgery. In what might be the most troubling study finding, researchers determined that there was a 41 percent increase in the use of painkillers, specifically opiates, in those who had surgery.

“The study provides clear evidence that for many patients, fusion surgeries designed to alleviate pain from degenerating discs don’t work”, says the study’s lead author Dr. Trang Nguyen, a researcher at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

So 3 out of every 4 people who get back surgery were unable to return to work. And of those patients, nearly half of them are likely and more pain as we can see from the increased amount of painkillers that they are taking since the surgery.

Why Are so Many Surgeries Failing?

Frequently, spinal pain will begin with an accident or injury to the head, neck or spine. These injuries will frequently lead to misalignments in the spinal column. The most common place for the spine, the misalignment is the upper neck. This is because the upper neck is the most movable and therefore the most vulnerable to injury.

When this upper neck area is misaligned it will throw off the delicate balance of the head and the neck. This will lead to head tilt. With as little as three quarters of a degree of tilt the brain will begin to make changes in the posture of the body.

These changes are a result of a reflex built into the brain to always keep the eyes and ears level with the horizon. Once the position of the head is changed the shoulders will begin to slightly tilt, then the hips and eventually it will result in muscular imbalances throughout the entire body and changes in posture from the head all the way down to the toes.

These resulting compensations from the original misalignment in the upper neck are frequently surgeons, physical therapists and general chiropractors focus.

An upper cervical specific chiropractor is focused on correcting this initial misalignment in the upper neck that is the root cause of these other postural changes.

These changes in posture can lead to symptoms of pain, sciatica and disc related problems, due to the uneven pressures that are applied to the discs, nerves and joints when the spine is not properly aligned.

Have you had surgery and are still having pain?

Are you considering surgery?

A natural alternative that addresses the root cause of your problem may be only a step away.

Hypertension—A Rapidly Growing Concern

Even though this is a very prevalent condition, most Americans seriously underestimate how serious it can be. However, that’s not a big surprise in a nation that treats many poor health practices as routine (high sugar intake, fast food, highly processed foods, etc.). The lifestyle that is prevalent in the US is the primary reason that more than 70 million in the country suffer from high blood pressure. If you’re keeping score, that’s shockingly close to one-third of the adult population.

Consider just a few of the dangerous health conditions that are related to hypertension:

  • Stroke
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Arthritis

How to Find Natural Relief

The standard for hypertension care in the US is medication. That is pretty much the same response to every ailment in an industry run by pharmaceutical companies. While blood pressure medications often come with a host of side effects, those side effects are better than being killed by the high blood pressure, so most people just deal with it. However, some case studies have shown that there may be a better way.

When the C1 or C2 vertebrae are out of alignment, many problems can result including an increase in blood pressure. Why is this the case? Studies conducted have not explained the exact reasons why, only that it works. However, consider the following:

  • The vertebral arteries bring blood to the brain by passing through the vertebrae of the upper cervical spine (hence the term vertebral). When the top bones of the spine are out of alignment, they can hinder this blood flow to the brain. Thus, the proper alignment of the spine is related to vascular health.

Once the misalignment is corrected, proper blood flow can be restored. In turn, blood pressure may level off. According to a 2007 study, the results of upper cervical chiropractic care were the equivalent of taking two blood pressure medications. If you are ready to find a natural way to control your blood pressure, upper cervical chiropractic may be the right choice for you.

NUCCA Chiropractic Care

What is NUCCA
The National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association (NUCCA) is an organization of Doctors of Chiropractic dedicated to patient care, education and research.

Spinal health care using the NUCCA procedures focuses on detecting and correcting a small misalignment in the upper neck area. Gentle, non-invasive adjustments don’t require any turning, twisting or popping.

Your upper cervical spine (neck) area influences all areas of your body. Injury or chronic misalignments can cause headaches, migraines, neck pain, low back pain, weakness and more.

The NUCCA technique is currently offered by less than 1% of all the Doctors of Chiropractic.

Before the NUCCA procedure can be performed, I will sit down with you and discuss your history and symptoms. If I determine that NUCCA can help, a thorough examination and x-rays will be done. A complete report of your findings and treatment options will be discussed.

First adjustment
Precision x-rays are taken of the spine before any treatment begins. The adjustment is performed with the patient lying on their side and the doctor applying a very light pressure behind the earlobe. A full demonstration can be seen on the video above.

The NUCCA procedure can be summed up with 5 major distinctions as compared to traditional Chiropractic:

  • Gentle adjustment to the neck with no turning, twisting or popping.
  • Precision x-rays to measure before and after corrections.
  • Total body posture and balance improvement
  • Greater stability to the spine
  • Hold adjustments longer with fewer visits
